Description

Roving Sommelier is passionate about premium quality Spanish regional wines. Bodegas Protos is a small family-owned winery that produces authentic, premium wines in the region of Ribera del Duero, Northern Spain. I visited Protos, (who are based in Peñafiel), as well as many other bodegas when I visited Ribera del Duero in 1997, and it has gone on to be one of my personal favourites.

Traditionally made from Tempranillo grapes (a.k.a. Tinta del Pais, locally in Ribera del Duero), this youthful artisan wine spends between 6-12 months ageing in old oak barrels before bottling. Bright ruby red colour, with purplish hints, this powerful red displays a fresh, fruity bouquet of soft red fruits with a touch of savoury spice and a long, intense finish. The wine is medium-to-full-bodied yet elegant with rustic charm. Best enjoyed with food and in a convivial atmosphere. Great value for money.

Alcohol: 14.5% abv (75cl)

Closure: Cork

Grape variety: Tinta del Pais (Tempranillo)

Flavour Profile: Full-bodied, Powerful, Aromatic, Black Fruits, Spice. Great with hard cheeses and red meats, especially charcuterie, roast lamb, pork and beef, and stews and casseroles.
