Moscatel de la Marina, Bodegas Enrique Mendoza, Alicante, Spain
Located in the small town of Alfaz del Pi near to Alicante in Spain, this small, family-owned winery was born in the late 1970s thanks to a passion for wine. And this passion has never stopped growing. The project was forged when Enrique Mendoza became extremely interested in wine and decided to continue the tradition in “La Marina Baixa” for making wines for family consumption. I have visited the vineyard and winery on two occasions. Enrique has now passed on the winemaking duties to his two sons.
This sweet wine has been made from 100% Moscatel (Alexandria) grapes, which is the traditional variety planted in the La Marina region. It can withstand the intense heat and dryness of the Spanish summers and is one of the only grape varieties that can be planted close to the Mediterranean Sea.
The wine is fresh, fruity and sweet and lightly fortified to 15% abv. Typical of the muscat grape, this wine shows lovely honeyed floral aromas and has a refreshing acidity on the finish. Perfect for citrus flavoured desserts such as crema catalana. Caramba!!
Alcohol: 15% abv (75cl)
Grape variety: 100% Moscatel (Alexandria)
