Description

Roving Sommelier is passionate about premium quality regional Italian wines. Established many years ago in Piedmont, I fondly remember growing up with Fontanafredda many years ago, as it was my Papa’s favourite Barolo producer. What’s more in 2002, I had the opportunity to visit and stay at the iconic estate, when I toured around the finest of Piedmont’s vineyards with a group of sommeliers. In fact, the estate at Fontanafredda used to be the king of Italy’s hunting lodge over a century ago, as the region of Piedmont was famous for the local game and robust cuisine.

Over the years, I have discovered the wonderful local Arneis grape and have tasted many examples, which for me, is a great alternative to the ubiquitous Pinot Grigio. Arneis from Piedmont is typically crisp, extremely fruity, and super fresh. Arneis also has a lovely texture too, and Fontanafredda’s “Briccotondo” does not disappoint, and it hits all the high notes that you would expect with a top-notch and authentic Arneis with a long, refreshing finish. Best enjoyed served chilled either on its own as an aperitif or with light appetisers and fresh fish and seafood and always in a convivial atmosphere.
