Description

Roving Sommelier is passionate about premium quality New Zealand regional wines. Award-winning sommelier, Robert Giorgione is also a New Zealand Wine Brand Ambassador and enthusiastically goes about his work with great passion and knowledge and positively promotes all the New Zealand winegrowers that he represents.

Deep Down Wines is an artisan winegrower located in Marlborough. The two founders are Clive Dougall (ex-winemaker at Seresin Estate) and Peter Lorimer (former sommelier and wine consultant). I met them many years ago: Peter used to work at China Tang restaurant in London, where he was head sommelier, and I first met Clive at Seresin Estate in 2006, when I was working the vintage harvest there, amongst a few other wineries. 2006 was not only a great vintage, but also Brian Bicknell’s last one at Seresin before he left to create Mahi, and Clive took over as head winemaker in 2007. Over the years I have followed and supported him with great interest, and I have also met up with him on many occasions while in London and/or in Marlborough.

I’m really excited by the Deep Down Wines project because I know how talented Clive Dougall is as a winemaker and he is using his many years of experience, passion, and winegrowing know-how to create an excellent range of boutique artisan wines, all sourced from top local growers, using organically grown grapes and crafted with love and care with minimal intervention. The wines are all made in small quantities, so once it’s gone, it’s gone. Deep Down produces Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, a tiny amount of Arneis (quite niche, even for New Zealand, and is mainly targeted towards a small handful of fine-dining restaurants), and a no-sulphur Pinot Noir. Yes, they may taste a little bit different to what you may be used to normally, but they are extremely good wines. Best enjoyed in a convivial atmosphere.
