Roving Sommelier is passionate about premium quality New Zealand regional wines. Established in 1985 by the Hill-Smith Family, Nautilus Estate is a small family-owned winery nestled in the cool and diverse valleys of Marlborough New Zealand. Nautilus Estate is also a member of New Zealand’s Family of Twelve vineyards. I visited them in May 2014 and enjoyed an amazing experience sampling many of the estate’s wines with their head wine maker, Clive Weston. I tasted this vintage (2019) in January 2020 at the annual New Zealand Wine Growers wine tasting in London, and, for me, it truly represents a great vintage and what the Marlborough region can deliver.

Nautilus is committed to crafting wines that are textural, age-worthy and food friendly, respecting and showcasing the unique Marlborough terroir. Grapes are selected from a handful of specially chosen Marlborough vineyard parcels, which contribute a vast spectrum of flavours and aromas.

The 2019 Nautilus Sauvignon Blanc (AMW) displays intense lifted aromas of passionfruit and citrus peel and hints of honeydew melon. The palate introduces a delightful citrus based mouth-watering intensity and finishes with a strong textural component. Best drunk chilled as an aperitif and/or with food such as fish, seafood and light salads.
