Roving Sommelier is passionate about premium quality Australian regional wines. Shobbrook Wines are located in the Barossa Valley in South Australia.  Tom Shobbrook makes wines in Flaxman Valley.  Natural wines made by hand from organically grown fruit. Shobbrook Wines has also developed a wonderful cult status, especially with those wine connoisseurs who appreciate iconic Australian fine wines made in special vineyards and in limited quantities. Therefore, the “Seppeltsfield” Syrah has become a rare treasure and a real discovery because Tom no longer farms vines in those original vineyards that made his name back in the day. After 12 years of growing grapes and making wines on their farm in Seppeltsfield things have come to an end.  They now have 2 hectares of vines in Flaxman Valley which will give them some fruit in the harvest of 2019. It won’t be much, but it will be very exciting to taste fruit from the vines they grew from cuttings in their nursery at home. Tom will eventually end up with around 5 hectares of vines and a mixed orchard of fruit and nut trees.

All Shobbrook Wines are produced naturally with minimal intervention and using biodynamic techniques. The 2009 “Seppeltsfield” Syrah has evolved beautifully and has become an intensely flavoured, complex red wine that is perfectly balanced with delicious black fruits, cracked black pepper and good structure with a lovely velvety texture. I suggest you decant this wine at least one hour before service. Best enjoyed with red meats and game dishes and in a convivial atmosphere.
