Description

Roving Sommelier is passionate about premium quality Italian regional wines. Planeta has become one of the most exciting wine producers in Italy. The Planeta family first came onto my wine radar way back in 2000, when I was head sommelier at 3-star La Tante Claire restaurant in London. At the time, our wine list was traditional and very French. However, chef-patron, Pierre Koffmann gave me the green light to go out and source some very interesting wines from around the world. There was just one thing though – all our new wines had to be made from non-French grape varieties. I got stuck into this new project with great enthusiasm and of course I started to create a wonderful selection of non-French wines. This, of course, includes Italy which has a myriad of its own indigenous varietals. The Planeta family and their Sicilian wines were starting to attract a lot of attention globally. In addition, I loved their philosophy of focussing on the grape variety and the unique terroirs and microclimates in which they are grown. Sicily at the time was in a very exciting place and Planeta were at the forefront of this great renaissance of Sicilian wines. For me, Planeta wines have become modern classics. What is more, Planeta has a seriously good range of authentic Sicilian wine styles that totally express the purity and unique flavours of each region. Santa Cecilia Nero d’Avola is produced in the Noto DOC.

Noto, cradle of Sicilian baroque and origin of Nero d’Avola, with its Mediterranean climate and white soil, is the ideal place to find the best quality from the noblest of Sicilian grape varieties. Santa Cecilia is the title of the Planeta family and the choice to use it underlines the importance that this label has for us. Elegant, powerful, and balanced, it celebrates the unique aromas of the southernmost lands of Sicily, of pomegranate and liquorice. It marries extremely well with cheeses and mates. Best enjoyed in a convivial atmosphere.
