Roving Sommelier is passionate about premium quality New Zealand regional wines. Established in the 1990s by Claire and Mike Allan, Huia is a small family-owned winery nestled in the cool valleys of the Rapaura sub-region of the Wairau River Valley in Marlborough, New Zealand. The Huia was a unique and highly prized native New Zealand bird. Tail feathers were treasured adornments, signifying great dignity, wisdom and elegance. Huia Vineyards use the feather as their emblem of quality.
Claire and Mike Allan’s sustainable ethos ensures their environment remains healthy and beautiful for future generations. Huia wines first came onto my wine radar in the early 2000s in London and I have visited their winery and vineyards a couple of times: in 2009 and 2014.
The 2018 Huia Sauvignon Blanc displays intense lifted aromas of passionfruit and citrus zest and hints of honeydew melon. The palate introduces a delightful citrus based mouth-watering intensity and finishes with a strong textural component. Best drunk chilled as an aperitif and/or with food such as fish, seafood and light salads.
