Description

Roving Sommelier is passionate about premium quality French regional wines. The wonderful wines produced by Olivier Humbrecht MW of Domaine Zind-Humbrecht first came onto my wine radar around 25 years ago in the mid-1990s, when I was working as a sommelier in some of London’s finest restaurants. For most people, when it comes to Alsace, Zind-Humbrecht is normally near the top of most wine lovers bucket list.

Since 1992 the family’s cellars have been in the Herrenweg in Turckheim near to the delightful town of Colmar in the heart of Alsace.  Originally, in 1959 when Domaine Zind-Humbrecht was established their cellars were in Wintzenheim. The passion for a profession is passed on from generation to generation, and with the Humbrecht family, this beautiful story begins in the 17th century. Today, the estate is made up of around forty hectares of vines, spread over a huge array of different soils. In fact, there are about ten terroirs in total, including many Grand Cru sites, which serve as the geological cradle of the greatest Alsatian grape varieties.

1997, (the year I became a sommelier), saw Zind-Humbrecht cultivate their vines for the first time using biodynamic techniques. The following year they made the transition to practise biodynamics for the whole estate and they were granted Ecocert certification. For me, along with the great Nicolas Joly, amongst others, Olivier Humbrecht MW is one of the foremost exponents of biodynamic winegrowing in the world. What’s more, he lets his wines speak for themselves.

All wines at the estate have been grown using certified organic and biodynamic principles.
