Roving Sommelier is passionate about premium quality New Zealand regional wines. Millton Estate is the Gisborne vineyard certified organically farmed by the Millton family using biodynamic principles since the mid-1980s. James and Annie Millton are also part of New Zealand’s Family of XII and produce very expressive wines from their family owned vineyard.
Clos de Ste Anne is a single vineyard situated on the steep slopes in the foothills of Poverty Bay. Grown in a little amphitheatre high on north-facing slopes, the whole Syrah berries, together with additional clusters of Viognier grapes, were fermented with native yeasts in 1200 litre wooden vats. Aged in special 600 litre ‘demi-muid’ casks from selected French cooperages, the wine has a silken texture and a wild, brooding earthiness. Bottled without filtration, with time, this wine may form a harmless natural deposit. Highly aromatic and complex with primary stone fruit flavours of black cherry and plum and is totally delicious. For me, Millton wines always have a lovely texture and positive energy. I suggest you carefully decant this red wine before service. Best enjoyed in a convivial atmosphere with flavoursome food.
