2004 K + K Kirnbauer, “Goldberg” Reserve, Blaufränkisch, Burgenland, Austria

Roving Sommelier is passionate about premium quality regional wines. This Austrian family-owned winery is located in Deutschkreutz in the region of Mittelburgenland in Eastern Austria, close to the Hungarian border. The 45-hectare estate is run by Markus and Walter Kirnbauer and Goldberg is one of the best and most famous vineyards in the region. The quality of the soils and the careful work in the vineyard create the conditions for the creation of great wines. Blaufränkisch is arguably the most important red wine in the region. Although white grapes are grown here, Burgenland is red wine territory, where the best reds are produced in Austria.

The Goldberg Reserve spends up to 18 months maturing in Tronçais oak barriques, which imparts spicy/vanilla notes. It is well-structured and powerful and displays elegant black fruit aromas of cherry and plum with a rounded and supple texture and good acidity. The 2004 has evolved very well and is drinking superbly right now. If you’re a fan of big flavoursome reds, then you’ll love this one.

I suggest you decant this wine at least one hour before service. Best enjoyed with red meats and game dishes and in a convivial atmosphere.
