Parker Coonawarra Estate is many wine lovers’ favourite Aussie winery and has developed a fine reputation internationally, especially with connoisseurs of iconic Australian vineyards and for top-notch Bordeaux blend reds. In addition, 1998 was considered a great vintage, especially on the hallowed “Terra Rossa” (iron-rich red soils) of the Coonawarra wine region in South Australia. Many wines received top scores from world-acclaimed wine critic, Robert Parker, and like the “Terra Rossa First Growth”, have gone on to achieve cult status. Allegedly, this special Australian red was named “Terra Rossa First Growth” because it was believed that the wine is on par with the great classic First Growth chateaux of the Medoc in Bordeaux. It was also designed to emphasise the special and unique terroir of the Coonawarra region.
This wine has been made from the finest grapes grown in the famed “Terra Rossa” soils on the limestones of Coonawarra in South Australia. Only the highest standards of winemaking practices have been employed, using the classic varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot to produce a wine of excellent quality and definition. The vintage was limited to only 4000 cases and matured in small French and American oak casks.
This one has evolved beautifully and is a very memorable wine that deserves to be enjoyed on very special occasions with sumptuous food. I suggest you decant this wine at least one hour before service. Best enjoyed with red meats and game dishes and in a convivial atmosphere.
