Roving Sommelier is passionate about premium quality Australian regional wines. Howard Park is many wine lovers’ favourite Aussie winery and has developed a fine reputation internationally, especially with connoisseurs of Western Australian vineyards and for top-notch Bordeaux blend reds. The now-iconic Howard Park was established in 1985 by the Burch family, who are specialists in Margaret River and Great Southern wines. Although the first vines were planted in 1974, the first vintage of a wine under the Howard Park label was in 1986.
The 1998 vintage in the Margaret River and Great Southern regions of Western Australia had warm and dry conditions throughout late March and April. Several batches of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot were identified in the vineyard as being of extraordinary quality. The wine was matured in 100% French oak barriques for 2 years prior to final blending when the batches were combined to produce a wine of great flavour, complexity and texture, which will reward long term cellaring. The Howard Park label only represents the best wine of each vintage.
This one has evolved beautifully and is a very memorable wine that deserves to be enjoyed on very special occasions with sumptuous food. I suggest you decant this wine at least one hour before service. Best enjoyed with red meats and game dishes and in a convivial atmosphere.
