Description

Roving Sommelier is passionate about premium quality Australian regional wines. Established in 1983 by Neil and Alison Paulett, this eponymous family-owned vineyard has gone on to gain a fabulous international reputation for their small batch, hand crafted Clare Valley wines.

Pauletts first came onto my wine radar back in the early Noughties, when I was wine buyer and head sommelier at the Fifth Floor at Harvey Nichols in Knightsbridge, London. Being an avid Riesling lover, I immediately fell in love with the Polish Hill River Riesling, and let’s just say the rest is history. Clare Valley Riesling has developed into an iconic and much celebrated Aussie wine style of its own. Most people would consider the legendary Jeffrey Grosset, who produces great Rieslings, especially those from vineyards located within Polish Hill, to be the benchmark to which most Riesling lovers attain. However, I would also include Pauletts in that esteemed category. Never tasted a wine made by Pauletts – you certainly won’t be disappointed. The whole family are now involved and continue to create wonderful wines and great memories. There is also a must-visit restaurant located at the winery, too, that serves delicious dishes all paired with Pauletts’ regional wines.

Within the Clare Valley is a small distinct corner nestled on slate soils called Polish Hill River. It is here that we produce a Riesling that captures the delicate flavours of this wonderful fruit; the hint of fresh lime, the citrus and distinct minerality giving it life and vitality. With careful cellaring, this wine will reward the patient.

Best enjoyed served chilled with or without food and in a convivial atmosphere.
