Description

Roving Sommelier is passionate about premium quality English regional wines. Owned by the Lindo family, Cornwall based vineyard Camel Valley first came onto my wine radar around 20 years ago (in the early Noughties). At the time, I was in London tasting an interesting line-up of English wines and I met Bob Lindo for the first time. Camel Valley, especially for their delicious Bacchus and their well-made sparkling wines, amongst other English vineyards were a real discovery for me and I have been following with interest ever since.

The Lindo family have been making internationally renowned, award-winning wines at Camel Valley since 1989. Located in Cornwall, the vineyard is a must-visit, where you can enjoy breath-taking views over the sunny slopes above the River Camel and the local hospitality.

For me, the highly aromatic Bacchus grape displays quintessentially English flavours and is our equivalent of New Zealand’s Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. I genuinely feel that a well-made English Bacchus shows great potential to be our white wine success story. In my humble opinion, Camel Valley produces the best around. Speaking as a sommelier, our homegrown Bacchus whites are very food friendly, too, especially as a great alternative to popular New Zealand savvy with seafood. English Bacchus also works well with that other English seasonal favourite – asparagus. Rest assured, I know this myself and with good experience as back in the day I used to serve Camel Valley’s Bacchus by the glass and where it used to feature on our tasting menus at Orrery Restaurant in Marylebone.

Camel Valley Bacchus Dry has also been granted PDO status (Protected Designated Origin) and has won many international awards.

This award-winning Bacchus is super fresh and elegant displaying pure and pristine flavours of citrus fruits such as lemon and grapefruit with lovely floral elderflower and mineral notes. Best enjoyed chilled and in a convivial atmosphere.
