Description

Roving Sommelier is passionate about premium quality regional Spanish wines. Founded in 2002 and located in the Priorat denominación, the winery is named after the Costers, which are the brittle slate slopes with ‘licorella’ soils that make up the historic heart of Priorat. The vineyards surround a Roman quarry in a stunning steep sloped valley and annual production is just 10,000 cases. The grapes come from three historic vineyards: Sant Marti, Mas Alsera, and Los Solanes, with traditional varieties including Garnatxa Blanca and Tinta as well as Samsó (Cinsault or Carignan) and vines dating back to the 1930s.

The winery of Costers del Priorat is in the heart of Les Solanes in El Molar. Built on the site of a Carthusian farmhouse from the end of the 15th century, takes advantage of its location and has integrated some of the old underground constructions blending in perfectly with its surroundings.

Dark, shiny when exposed to the sun and with a delicate texture, ‘licorella’ is the skin of the costers. This decomposed slate topsoil covers layers of blue and reddish bedrock. Licorella soils are poor and unable to retain water. This apparent disadvantage is key to keep grape yields under control, to encourage quality and to bring out the singular minerality of Priorat wines. It concentrates the essence of the soil. These slate soils give Priorat wines an exceptional and characteristic taste. A singularity that is transmitted to this intense and unique wine.

The youngest wine of the estate is a fresh burst of red fruits and Mediterranean forest aromas. It is vibrant and open on the palate – the perfect partner for meals and laid-back moments. Grapes are sourced from three vineyards resulting in a balanced wine which reinforces the accessible character of what we consider a regional wine – the presentation card of our DOQ Priorat.

Best enjoyed decanted at least one hour before service, at room temperature and in a convivial atmosphere.
