Description

Roving Sommelier is passionate about premium quality regional Spanish wines. Family-owned winery (Chivite Family Estates) produces affordable premium wines in the region of Navarra in northern Spain. I first went to Navarra way back in 1998 with a group of sommeliers while working in London. I remember that I discovered many wonderful things there, including the wines that were produced from Tempranillo and old Garnacha vines, and also the delicious Moscatels and distinct rosados. I returned to Navarra once again around ten years later and visited many more bodegas and drank plenty of pacharan, as well as the region’s characterful wines and delicious produce.

Founded in 1647, Chivite is one of Spain’s oldest winemaking dynasties. With Julian Chivite now at the helm they continue to drive Spanish wine through both classic and modern styles. With Navarra being such a large region with huge variation in climate from the continental in the south to the maritime in the north it is impossible to generalise the wines of the region. For this reason, we tend to look to individual sites. Legardeta is an incredible place with its own microclimate which on the north face is cool and perfect for ripening chardonnay to its southerly slopes which give the necessary sunlight and heat to ripen the skins of red varieties. As you’d expect, yields are low, and the vineyard is maintained using as little as possible in terms of chemicals and fertilizers to help encourage biodiversity. As well as producing this great wine, the vineyard also yields the fruit that what many consider to be Spain’s finest white wine, the Chivite “Coleccion 125” Chardonnay.

The 2019 Chivite “Coleccion 125” Vendimia Tardia has been produced with the best Moscatel de Grano Menudo (Muscat á Petits Grains) grapes, overripe on their own vines in the “El Candelero” vineyard – planted in 1969 – and handpicked in several selections from October to December. The must fermented naturally in eight 225 litre French oak barrels. The artisan, delicate handling received by this wine gives it a remarkable ageing ability.

Best served chilled and enjoyed with desserts and puddings in a convivial atmosphere.
